[Press Release] 2017 SAEMAUL UNDONG TRAINING FOR FIJI

Four (4) Fijian successfully completed the “2017 Saemaul Undong Training for 5 Countries”- Fiji, Philippines, Uganda and two other Pacific Island countries Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands that was held from 11-20 May 2017, at the headquarters of the Korea Saemaul Undong Center (KSUC) in Bundang.

The purpose of the training was to cultivate strong leadership qualities in Saemaul leaders who could play a lead role in poverty alleviation as well as to establish sustainable development practices by instilling saemaul values of diligence, self-help and cooperation in members of the village. The trainees, mainly from village and government level are expected to implement the values of the Saemaul Undong in their own country upon their return through this step-by-step training.

Mr. So Jin Kwang, the President of the Korea Saemaul Undong Center emphasized “the role of saemaul leaders “to develop their village first”. “They have to contribute to development of their nation last”, he said. He also added his sincere hope for the saemaul participants to play a “leading role in implementing Saemaul Undong” which he hopes will “become a living history” in the development of their respective countries”.

In recent years, the Government of the Republic of Korea has partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to implement the Saemaul-Undong, a proven successful model of rural development and national transformation. The training is an ongoing annual training program which started last year. It is a fully -funded program organized by the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Korea. Last year five (5) participants from Fiji attended the training program.
